Rhinoplasty

What Is Rhinoplasty?

Rhinoplasty (nose surgery) is one of the most frequently performed plastic surgery procedures. During rhinoplasty, the nose is reshaped, reduced or augmented to improve its appearance.

For a patient with a deviated septum, it is often performed along with septoplasty, a procedure that corrects a deviated septum. In such cases, rhinoplasty effectively treats health and breathing problems, in addition to improving the patient's appearance.

Who is a good candidate for Rhinoplasty?

The best candidates for rhinoplasty are healthy patients with reasonable expectations. A revision rhinoplasty (had prior nasal surgery) makes the surgery more difficult yet is commonly performed in Dr. Ferzli's practice.

How is a Rhinoplasty performed?

Rhinoplasty is performed in the operating room under general anesthesia. The length of surgery varies per patient but generally takes 2-3 hours. The rhinoplasty can be performed either "open" or "closed" The decision on the approach to the surgery are determined during your consultation. If the external or "open" rhinoplasty technique is performed the small incision heals very well across the columella.

What Concerns Can A Rhinoplasty Improve?

There are several goals of rhinoplasty, including facilitating breathing as well as improving appearance. During rhinoplasty, the surgeon may attempt to do one or more of the following:

  • Remove a hump
  • Modify the bridge
  • Reshape the tip
  • Reshape or resize the nostrils
  • Repair an injury
  • Open breathing passages
  • Increase or decrease size of the nose

Rhinoplasty can involve modifying bone, skin or cartilage, or all three.

How is recovery from Rhinoplasty?

There will be a small cast on the nose which is generally removed within the first 5-7 days following surgery. If stitches need to be removed, these are also addressed within the first 5-7 days after surgery. Nasal swelling and congestion are to be expected during the first several weeks. Heavy lifting and exercise should be avoided for 2 weeks. The full result of rhinoplasty and healing can take up to 1 year yet most patients achieve their healing goal within the first month.
